What is Slow-Cooker Spirituality?

Slow-Cooker Spirituality is the idea of immersing ourselves as a community in the story of Jesus. Discipleship is about being formed in the image of Jesus. Thus, spending time soaking, or stewing, in the story of Jesus allows us to pick up the flavors. It allows us to experience the depth and nuance of Jesus in our everyday lives. We live in a world where more is always demanded. Do more. Consume more. Sometimes slowing down can be an act of resistance. Sometimes sitting with something a little longer can help us see the vibrancy we would have otherwise missed, like allowing a long exposure photograph in a darkroom. We do this through developing and participating in rhythms of life together that force us to slow down and pause a little longer.

Reading

There are two ways that you can engage in Slow-Cooker Spirituality's reading. First, we follow a daily reading plan as a community that allows us to sit with the Bible as a story that we actively engage.

Second, You can choose one passage—a paragraph or a story—that you will sit with for the week. Then, read the passage daily and see what emerges as the week progresses.

Reflecting

We reflect on what we read with a series of questions to help us move toward practice. We call these questions: Head, Heart, and Hands.

Head

  • What do I think?

    • What stood out. Points of clarity, curiosity, and conflict.

    • Choose a verse, word, or a theme from the passage.

  • Why do I think that?

  • How can I think about this?

Heart

  • What do I feel?

    • Does the feeling show up anywhere in your body?

  • Why am I feeling this?

  • How does this connect and resonate with my story?

Hands

  • What can I do?

  • Why should I do that?

  • How do I do this?
