The Settler Church | Setting on Reconciliation pt. 1

The Call to Worship

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Amen.

Brave Space by Micky Scott Bey Jones

Together we will create brave space

Because there is no such thing as a “safe space”

We exist in the real world

We all carry scars and we have all caused wounds.

In this space

We seek to turn down the volume of the outside world,

We amplify voices that fight to be heard elsewhere,

We call each other to more truth and love

We have the right to start somewhere and continue to grow.

We have the responsibility to examine what we think we know.

We will not be perfect.

This space will not be perfect.

It will not always be what we wish it to be

But

It will be our brave space together,

And, we will work on it side by side.

The Message

Conversation Series | Settling on Reconciliation

If you have watched the news over the past few years, you will see a trend; many Christians seem to believe their faith is under attack, and in response are taking on very defensive positions. But what if our faith isn’t under attack? What if we have actually lost the essence of who Jesus has called us to be? What if what we are seeing is a rejection of an anti-christlike Christianity that acts more like a colonizing empire than a counter-culture kingdom where peace is always sought, forgiveness is always preached, and reconciliation is always the pinnacle faith?

Message | The Settler Church

This week Glenn explores reconciliation in Matthew 5.

The Eucharist Litany (portions of this litany were written by Naomi Lippett)

Reader: This is Christ's table

The table of communion and relationship, where through the work of Christ and the power the Holy Spirit as we feast together on this single loaf and single cup, we are brought into union with the Triune God.

All: This is Christ's table

Reader: The table of shared human life, where no one is excluded and no one unwelcome, where unity is found in difference, where the other is embraced and seen.

All: This is Christ's table

Reader: The table of mystery, where this food nourishes more than just our physical hunger.

All: This is Christ's table

Reader: The table of thanksgiving and joy, where we lift up our lives in response to God's outrageous goodness.

All: This is Christ's table

Reader: The table of remembrance, which on the night He was betrayed, in the company of friends, he took bread and broke it saying, this is my body given for you, eat this in remembrance of me. He then took the cup of wine, and gave thanks saying this is my blood of the new covenant. Drink this in remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, this command of the Saviour, and all that came to pass, we pray:

All: Come Holy Spirit and transform these gifts into the means of grace that we need in this moment.

Reader: The gifts of god for the people of God.

Run to Christ's table.

All: “We consume the broken body of Christ

becoming the broken body of Christ

present in a broken world.”

Formational Learning

What stood out to you from the liturgy? Were there any points of curiosity, clarity, confusion, conviction, or conflict that emerged as we walked through liturgy together?

(Head)

What comes to mind when you hear the word “church?”

What changes when the church is defined as people and not a building?

(Heart)

When have you experienced a person hearing you and empathizing with your pain, even when it accuses their tradition/faith?

(Hands)

How can we become a people who sit in the ashes of burning church buildings?

Announcements

  • We have a Slow-Cooker Spirituality group that meets online at 9:30am PST every Thursday. This coming week we will be sitting in Mathew 18:1-9

    • Using the Head, Heart, Hands questions, spend some time reflecting on the passage and writing down what emerges for you.

(Head) What do I think about what I read?

(Heart) What do I feel as I am reflecting?

(Hands) What do I do to respond?

  • One of the ways we invest in the future of FōS is through tithes and offering, generous giving. You can give online at www.fos.church/partner. Make sure to follow the instructions.

Our Benediction

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.*

The Message

Conversation Series | The Devil You know

The Satan has been an all-encompassing character in the Church's imagination for millennia. Depending on your tradition, Satan was responsible for everything from illnesses, misdeeds, evil, and that annoying hum in the sound system. In this conversation series, we will explore the biblical and historical development of the Satan and how it has affected ideas of accountability and our ability to ask the hard questions of God.

Message | I Saw Satan Fall

This week Dr. Randy Furushima leads us in a conversation about Isaiah 14 and the implications of misinterpretation and bad storytelling.

What stood out to you from the liturgy? Were there any points of curiosity, clarity, confusion, conviction, or conflict that emerged as we walked through liturgy together?

(Head)

What changes when we enter scripture as a story to live into and riff from rather than a moralism to always humble us?

how does naming our enemy freeze them in time and create shallow characters?

(Heart)

How would our stories of faith and life open up if we embraced hyperbole as a tool to add depth to our insights and experience?

(Hands)

What safeguards can we put in place so that we do not freeze scripture and it’s character development but continue the tradition of sitting in and adapting the story?

Announcements

The Satan becomes Satan, then Satan becomes the devil as the story travels from Babylon to Jerusalem, and from Jerusalem to Alexandria. How do you think our moving to North America affects the way we understand the devil we know?

This week we are sitting in the passage of 1 John 4:11-21 and will hear three voices unpack the challenge and effect of divine love made real and incarnate through the community.

What stood out to you from the liturgy? Were there any points of curiosity, clarity, confusion, conviction, or conflict that emerged as we walked through liturgy together?

(Head)

Love gives us confidence in light of judgement and fear makes us afraid of punishment, how does that affect our experience of God?

(Heart)

The love of God is experienced through us; we are the embodiment of God's love. Tell us about a time when somebody showed up as the love of God for you?

(Hands)

If showing up is how we give a gift of love, how do we show up in a way that removes the fear of judgement?

It will not always be what we wish it to be

But

It will be our brave space together,

And, we will work on it side by side.

Conversation Series | Setting the Table

When thinking about setting a table, we each have our own vision of what this looks like; sometimes it’s a mother calling that dinner will be ready soon, maybe it’s a pint with a friend, or perhaps it’s a simple lone place setting with your favorite show. Whatever the case, there is usually a common factor: this table is closed and comfortable. Yet, when we look at Jesus in the gospel narratives, the table becomes a dynamic place of inclusion, celebration, and even confronting systems of injustice. Regardless of where we find ourselves, we create space, show up, and embrace the possibility of the moment. Our table becomes open and uncomfortable. In this conversation series, Setting the Table, we explore Jesus’ life around the table. BYOB

Message | Present in a Broken World

This week Carl and Glenn jump into a round table conversation about what it means to show up like Jesus in the world around us.

The Eucharist Litany (Reader portion written by Naomi Lippett)

Reader: This is Christ's table

The table of communion and relationship, where through the work of Christ and the power the Holy Spirit as we feast together on this single loaf and single cup, we are brought into union with the Triune God.

This is Christ's table

The table of shared human life, where no one is excluded and no one unwelcome, where unity is found in difference, where the other is embraced and seen.

This is Christ's table

The table of mystery, where this food nourishes more than just our physical hunger.

This is Christ's table

The table of thanksgiving and joy, where we lift up our lives in response to God's outrageous goodness.

This is Christ's table

The table of remembrance, which on the night He was betrayed, in the company of friends, he took bread and broke it saying, this is my body given for you, eat this in remembrance of me. He then took the cup of wine, and gave thanks saying this is my blood of the new covenant. Drink this in remembrance of me.

Remembering, therefore, this command of the Saviour, and all that came to pass, we pray:

Come Holy Spirit and transform these gifts into the means of grace that we need in this moment.

The gifts of god for the people of God.

(Head)

When Jesus accepts Levi's invitation to the table a mutual reconciliation takes place. How does being present and holding space with others help move us towards repentance and reconciliation?

What changes when we let go of controlling a situation and enter into reciprocal relationships?

(Heart)

The Pharisees question why Jesus invested his time with “sinners” and shunned holy people. In what ways are we more like Scribes and Pharisees than Jesus?

(Hands)

How do we show up like Jesus at the tables where others invite us to share space?

Announcements

  • We have a Slow-Cooker Spirituality group that meets online at 9:30am PST every Thursday. This coming week we will be sitting in 1 John 4:11-21.

May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you: wherever he may send you;

may he guide you through the wilderness: protect you through the storm;

may he bring you home rejoicing: at the wonders he has shown you;

may he bring you home rejoicing: once again into our doors.*

Becoming the Broken Body of Christ | Setting the Table pt. 3

May 16, 2021 by Carl Amouzou

What can we do to become a Eucharistic community as a habit rather than a theory?

Formational Learning

What stood out to you from the liturgy? Were there any points of curiosity, clarity, confusion, conviction, or conflict that emerged as we walked through liturgy together?

(Head)

How does the Eucharist practiced as a ritual help us begin to see our current location, and what is the shared story it invites us into?

What feelings or emotions arise for you as we explore a new reading of the Eucharist as inclusion to the table of Christ?

Who is missing from the table of Christ in your experience, and how can we work to include them?

What stood out to you from the liturgy? Were there any points of curiosity, clarity, confusion, conviction, or conflict that emerged as you walked through liturgy together?

(Head)

How are systems of discipleship challenged or affected when we realize discipleship, following Jesus, must lead to being present with Jesus at Zacchaeus’ Table?

(Heart)

When have you experienced restoration from sitting with the wrong people? How did it change the way you hold space at a table?

(Hands)

How can we become and show up as better guests?
